Misleading Title

I concur with another review. The title of this book is misleading. Most of the book builds the Biblical reason for needing Jesus. Which is great! But less than 1/4th is devoted to actual evidence of the resurrection.

I should of read some of this book before buying it. I already know why I need Jesus. Instead I wanted some academic reasons to prove the resurrection. What I got is a evangelistic book that shows why people need Jesus.

This book should be titled, "Why You Need Jesus."

"evidence of the resurrection" is very hard to put down. the writer josh mcdowell is a former atheist who set out to prove christianity and Jesus to be a falehood and eneded up proving it to be a fact he found lots of historical information to prove christianity and the Bible and the resurrection to be the truth. many people know the scriptures but they dont know the facts and the proof that are out there and josh mcdowl has uncovered them in this fasinating book which makes easter all the more intresting. this book would make a great gift idea for a friend or family member.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. If He didn't rise from the dead, as the Apostle Paul said, then ""we are of all men most miserable." So we need to be able to give a reason for our faith, especially to unbelievers.

The book is so well documented that few if any readers will be able to deny that the resurrection actually occurred. A great resource for laypeople, pastors, evangelists and skeptics.

Centuries of Spirit

Recently I was looking for a one-volume summary of the various Catholic spiritual movements and developments during these past two millennia. Aumann's book was suggested to me by a nice Catholic lady whom I asked about it. It turned out to be a serious but still very readable history of the various individuals and orders that contributed to what is now a vast and multi-faceted spiritual tradition. This is a book about the many ways that people of different times and cultures, but of the same basic belief system, prayed, fasted, meditated, contemplated, listened, and laboured to know and love their God. It is not a book of prayer texts. Of interest to Catholics wanting to engage with their spiritual roots, other christians who want to learn about spiritual history, or non-christians wanting an account with some depth of the evolution of christian spiritual beliefs and practices, this is a solid work. Bearing in mind that until 1054, there was essentially one christian church, and until the early 1500s, there were no 'protestants', this book does valuable service for christians of whatever background. The author begins with a fine introduction to the spiritual groundings in the Bible, then takes a look at apostolic and post-apostolic traditions. He does an excellent comparison of the rise of monasticism in both the eastern and western churches, and then focuses more closely on the Benedictines and the hermetic orders. From the 'isolationist' and communal spiritualities, Aumann describes the rise of the medieval military orders (which seem so odd today), and the different orders of the mendicant friars, who relied so heavily on visionary and charismatic founders, such as St. Francis and St. Dominic. From there, he takes us into the lives and spirit of the English, Germanic, and Italian mystics, such as Eckhart and St. Catherine of Siena. The remaining third of the book deals with the post-reformation period, right up to modern times, and includes material on Ignatius Loyola, Teresa of Avila, Alphonsus Liguori (all canonized for their spiritual advances), as well as Charles de Foucauld. This is not casual reading; it does take some effort and time. But it is worth it. Aumann has done all seekers a service by providing an accessible source of many christian approaches to a relationship with God. Others have covered this territory, but not so well, and so clearly, in so few pages (277 of text). Aumann provides thorough notes, and a good index. If I wanted one book to give to a serious student of religion, a seminarian, or a church study group, that summarized the long history of spiritual 'trends' within the Catholic tradition, this would be it!

Of perennial value

Christian Spirituality in the Catholic Tradition starts off with a solid grounding in emphasizing Sacred Scripture and Tradition as the soul of theology, with the Gospels containing "Christian spirituality par excellence." This survey of the history of Catholic spirituality rightly starts out in Scripture (both Old Testament and New) and runs through key individual figures, types of spiritualities, and various religious orders, while not shying away from describing heresies and heterodox teachings. Written in 1985, Fr. Aumann, takes us right to Vatican II.

As a companion volume to Fr. Aumann's "Spiritual Theology", the stated goal in the Preface is to move from the theory and principles of that book to the actual life and witness of Catholics throughout the centuries. The hope is to acquaint the modern reader with the origins, development, and adaptation of Christian spirituality, perhaps helping to discern "what is of perennial value in Christian spirituality."

In this "modest" one-volume history, Fr. Aumann meets -- and exceeds -- his goals. Aside from wishing he had spent more time on later 20th century figures and movements (it takes up only seventeen pages - mainly covering the late 19th century into the early 20th century), the rest of this historical survey is exceptionally well done. It flows very well and is eminently readable, but it is very dense in content -- the author has a wonderful gift of being able to condense and distill the most important aspects of a certain time and place, spirituality, or individual. (For example, St. Augustine may have been given the most space in this book at about seven pages, but it is the best treatment of him in so little space that I have ever seen - one really gets an excellent understanding of his spirituality.) What this provides is a correct understanding of the topic being covered in its proper context. This should not be underestimated because spiritual movements so often depend on world and Church events.

Acknowledging that it is one volume (a rich 277 pages sans end notes), the extensive footnoting provides the interested reader the opportunity to go in depth on any subject with these solid sources. But footnotes or not, one can easily find additional resources on, and writings of, key figures in any major book outlet or through the internet. Chances are you will, like me, run out and purchase additional materials on particularly striking individuals to dive into their writings. And because of his wonderful scholarship and engaging style, you will want to check out his other books, especially the aforementioned "Spiritual Theology".

My highest recommendation to any Christian (Catholic or not), or any other spiritual person for that matter, who wants to understand better the history of the Church, its leading lights, and how we got where we are today. And maybe while you're at it, you'll discover what spirituality is of "perennial value" to you.

Student of Christian Spirituality

I am a student taking my first graduate level course in Christian Spirituality, for which Aumann's text is required. Initially I found the reading to be difficult due somewhat to the author's style, which is of necessity more academic than my usual choice of reading, but mainly due to the many theological terms, the definitions of which can be found only in a "Christian" dictionary. Once I got past the first couple of chapters, the terminology didn't seem as daunting, and actually I began to look forward to the next reading assignment, often exceeding what was required. All of the areas necessary for a basic understanding (and more)of the subject are covered, and this book has deepened my interest or generated new areas of interest that I hope will be fleshed out more fully in class discussions.

Please do not buy

Please save yourself time and money, if thinking of buying this book. It has outdated content. Published in 2012 and this book still talks about J2EE. Though the title mentions J2EE, I assumed its used synonymous with JEE. This book would have been a good buy 10 years ago. The struts version discussed is Struts 1 and the design patterns chapter is pathetic. You are better off reading various technical blogs that are for free. I cant believe that the print edition is 25$. I am not saying the content is wrong, all I'm saying is you are reading about cassette recorder in the day and age of dvd and cd's. I just returned the kindle edition.

Outdated.

As someone else has pointed out already are things which are outdated like topic on struts. The content discussed was struts 1 and not struts 2. there is no mention about the version that is being discussed in the book. Also it does not touch on topics like spring mvc. Few examples quoted on design patterns, dependency injection does not convey the meaning properly. But overall it is a good book to brush up the knowledge and easy to understand also.

Lots of Good Info for the Beginner

We recently bought a new house that sits on about 2.5 acres and almost every year, we buy a beef cow from someone else, have it packaged and share it with family. It's a huge money saver.

Now that I have the room, I'm very interested in raising a cow of my own but wasn't sure how hard it would be or time consuming and was having a lot of doubts so I was very happy to see this book on offer.

I found lots of good information regarding what to feed them and how to take care of them. I think having one or two cows is very viable for me. The book made it seem like it wouldn't be hugely time consuming to do. Now rather than paying someone else to raise it, I'm pretty sure I could do it on my own and I know NOTHING about animals that aren't pets. I found the book to be concise and in language I could understand. I'm sure raising a herd is harder than just one but there was information within the book that you could use regardless of how many you are wanting to raise.

I also found the section on breeds of cattle to be very informative. This book goes into pretty much everything from feeding, behavior, how to prepare a pasture, etc. I was ready to call my local vet if I had any questions but after reading, found that everything I was concerned about was covered within the book, especially making sure your cow stays healthy because since they can't talk and aren't the brightest animals, how would you tell when they need something before whatever that is gets really bad and they require a vet? The book details what to watch for. I'm feeling pretty comfortable about getting my own animal after reading.

I think this book will be a very good reference after I get the animal as well. My only concern is that I will end up getting too attached because I'll be raising just one or two rather than a herd. I think it would be easier to keep an emotional distance when dealing with lots of them rather than just one but hopefully, it won't be too hard.

I'm definitely going to be keeping this for reference and would recommend to anyone who is interested in raising cattle.

This book is a great resource for not only the student of agriculture, but also the curious. The requirements, benefits and responsibilities of cattle ownership get coverage in significant detail considering the size of the text. I find the overview of the process quite interesting.

The opening chapter explores the path to a life in cattle breeding, while the remaining chapters encompass what to do once there. This thorough text includes insider tips, which make the subject even more approachable.

One would certainly require formal instruction to pursue a career in cattle breeding, but "Raising Beef Cattle for Dummies" provides such deep insight into the subject that I consider it an excellent place to start.

A good book for the very very new beginner to raising cattle. Maybe for a 4-H person just getting into it. I am the wife of a rancher and thought it would be good to know more myself. Not much new here for me.

Cute Christmas Story

This is a cute Christmas story about two completely opposite people that, with all the right twists and turns, find out that all they ever wanted was right in front of them. Easy to read, and hard to put down, I was a bit sad to see it end. It was very easy to visualize the characters with the descriptions given by the author. Can't wait to read more of her stories.

Perfect for the holidays...

I truly enjoyed reading this light-hearted story about love at Christmas time. It was very easy to follow and I found at times I was sad, then laughing and always anticipating what would happen next. I have a tween daughter who is reading it now and she is really enjoying the book. I think the author did a great job!

Don't Waste your money like I did. All the questions are in the book and can make and print a word doc in one minute.

This workbook was such a wast of money. I even spent more to have it shipped faster and was greatly disappointed when I opened it up and read the 5 or 6 pages the author "wrote" giving a small synopsis of the book and constantly repeating himself of what he said before. The rest of the pages are just the exact same pages that have 5 questions that you could have made on your own literally in 1 minute. Maybe I was over expecting on what this workbook would be. The 5 questions are 1. What is my one thing?, 2.What will I do today to move forward, 3. Did I accomplish today's one thing? Yes or No, 4. If not what did I do instead?, 5. What took me off track? Same things in the book so don't wast your time and just make a word document for 66 days with those on there.
