Marine Colonel David Saxon’s “Big Mean One” Special Ops team is being airlifted to extract hostages seized onboard an ocean liner by the infamous terrorist, Carlos Evangelista. It’s a daring mid-sea rescue, one certain to cause heavy casualties. But the “Evangelist” has more in mind than slaughtering innocent civilians. A neo-Soviet plot plans to kill Libya’s Kaddafi—so that a new Libyan strongman will welcome placement of Soviet missiles for a nuclear strike against the U.S. Sixth Fleet, on maneuvers in the Gulf of Sidara. To the neo-Soviet leadership and the “Evangelist,” it’s just the first round in a world-dominating game of nuclear brinkmanship. Review
Alexander (who has penned several nonfiction military titles, including Tomorrow's Soldier and Stealth Warfare) has created in USMC equally believable next -generation weapon systems that are deployed in a high-tech, futuristic battlefield. Alexander paints accurate, detailed pictures of how each weapon functions, how it is used tactically in this future universe of warfare, taking the reader along step by step. The entire effect makes for totally gripping, enthralling reading that throws the reader more surprises than a cluster bomb blowing an enemy tank to smithereens. USMC crackles with excitement on every page. It is a not-to-be-missed experience in military thriller reading that is highly recommended to all true lovers of exciting action-adventure fiction. -- St. Louis Post
Alexander's latest thriller is set in the immediate future and is an all too plausible extrapolation of today's news ... nonstop action ... great escapist reading, despite its terrifying possibility. -- Minneapolis Star Tribune
From the Publisher
In south central Asia a resurgent Neo-Soviet Union pits its massive armies against the combined military might of the European Defense Force in a battle for energy reserves in the oil-rich Transcaucasus that threatens to escalate from regional conflict to global war, and from conventional confrontation to nuclear Armageddon, lacking only a flashpoint to ignite worldwide holocaust.
In the waters of the Atlantic near the Straits of Gibraltar a gigantic cruise liner packed with hundreds of hostages is under the control of a small army of well-armed and trigger-happy terrorists masterminded by a leader who makes the Jackal look like an eagle scout. Among the hostages is the playgirl wife of the US secretary of defense who the terrorists execute on camera before the eyes of the world's media. In the Libyan capital city of Tripoli, al-Sharq, the dictatorial successor to Qaddafi known as the Shark, has two Russian stealth fighters at his command. Called Berkuts or "Golden Eagles," the advanced warplanes are poised to deliver nuclear strikes against the US war fleet lying off the coast of Libya in the Gulf of Sidra.
In the midst of this turmoil, space-based surveillance detects the existence of a nuclear weapon onboard the captured cruise liner. It soon becomes known that once the cruise ship has entered the Med the nuke will be detonated, creating a global choke point for United States sea power that would have disastrous consequences for the future of America and her Western allies. Against the advice of his top cabinet officials the president orders the United States' most capable, yet most unpredictable, special warfare unit on a mission of critical importance to the future of the world -- reclaim the cruise ship before the vessel can enter the Med, kill all terrorists onboard, free the surviving hostages, and disarm or destroy the weapon of mass destruction before it explodes.
The only wild card is Colonel David Saxon, unpredictable commander of Marine Force One. Kept on a tight leash while chained to a desk at the Pentagon for months, Saxon is the one CO with the brains, guts and killer instincts to make mission succeed. But turning Saxon loose might make the cure worse than the cause. As the captured ship nears its target, though, the orders are cut. The "Big Mean One," with Saxon back in command, is agile, mobile, hostile and ready to stage the most audacious and dangerous mission ever attempted in the history of special warfare.

Kind of lame - Not recommended
By Jeff Wydra
Having read several unbelievably good series of books by Barry Eisler, Stephen Hunter & Daniel Silva; I was kind of disappointed in my 1st Alexander read. The story lines were thin and all over the place, there way too many characters, many with corny names. His lack of knowledge about the books firearms (descriptions, manufacturers & caliber) was very distracting to a self proclaimed gun nut like me. I'm no expert on aircraft or warships -but the poor knowledge of small arms details put some doubt in my mind as to those descriptions accuracy. John Rain, Gabriel Allon or Bob Lee Swagger would send the star of this book "David Saxon" home in a body bag! I guess I've been spoiled by the modern masters.
