The general index also includes names of librettists and places involved in the writing or performing of the cantatas.

Young has admirably translated the Bach cantatas into current, readable English. However, the subtitle of his book would read more accurately A Descriptive Guide since analyses that might disclose any illuminating thoughts on the union of text and music are minimal--the focus is primarily textual interpretation. Although the usefulness of the work is limited, those who have braved the verbiage of W.G. Whittaker's The Cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach, Sacred and Secular (1959) for general information will find Young's effort refreshing. Recommended for general readers.

Out-dated Chronology

When I first saw this added added to our library, I was very interested. But upon inspection,I discovered that Young has completely ignored the scholarly work on the chronology established by the Alfred D�rr studies on watermarks and Georg Dadlesen on caligraphy. The book is useless, for a reliable good English translations, those of Z. Philip Ambrose are avaiable on line.
