A Limited Scope

This is not a book for the serious artist; this is a book for someone searching for a unique hobby. Contained within are simplistic descriptions of the author's naive and limited techniques (he creates crafts, not pieces of art). He combines these instructions with over-simplified rules of composition and space. Furthermore, Bossom hardly explores the dangerous potentiality encaustic presents, which I think is negligent. For a better insight view Mattera's "The Art of Encaustic Painting."

Disappointed

Mattera's book on encaustic seems to be the only good book out there on encaustic technique right now. Bossom's books are a step up from making melted crayon art in elementary school. I hate to be so rude, but the books are really not about encaustic painting, but about doing something with an iron and wax, and making one very particular style of art. Unless you want to make pictures just like Bossom's, this book is not in the least helpful. I write this review as a painter who uses encaustic techniques, so I feel I have some credentials to make such a harsh judgement.

A very useful, beautifully written book

If you're already a serious encaustic artist, this is probably not the book for you. I love, love all art mediums and will probably sample them all before I expire. I've written for a digital art magazine and am best known for my digital art, but I've also sold my watercolors and collage in an art gallery, and have done everything from needlework to mosaics. That said, this is a wonderful book with lots of options for someone wanting to sample encaustics. So, maybe I don't want to invest several hundred dollars in materials before I know how long this newest interest will last. Maybe I'd like to play with melting crayons or oil pastels with a travel iron. That doesn't lessen my art, and it doesn't make this book any less valuable.
I discovered this book in the art supply store and bought it immediately, full price no less, which is a little unusual for me. I usually come home and look online for the best price. The other encaustics books I've browsed in the past have been stuffy and condescending and seemed intended for artists who already had years of experience under their belts. Michael Bossom suggests tools that I already have and includes some techniques that may be seen as too crafty, but it's a great introduction to an art technique that, once I've explored it a bit, I may decide to get serious about it, or I may wander happily on to my next addiction.
My favorite part is the list of surfaces to paint on with wax, including all kinds of card stock, fabrics, tissue papers, aluminum foil, watercolor paper, plywood, glass, plastics, etc., That should keep me happy for a good long time, exploring the possibilities! As the name suggests, this is a project book, and the projects are laid out in easily understandable sequences and illustrations. I'm happy with my purchase and will recommend it to my artsy friends.
